OG Reach Finals Day!

T20 quarter final success at last for OGCC!! After two disappointing loses at this stage in 2021 & 2022, our T20 lads exercised their demons to deservedly secure their place in this years finals day with a big win over Whaley Bridge on Sunday!

After terrible weather for what has felt like an eternity, it wasn’t surprising to arrive on Sunday to a wicket that was a bit on the damp side. Whaley won the toss and after a little bit of hesitation, Whaleys skipper Holden asked OG to take first knock.

To our delight the track seemed to be playing well with Jack and Baylee setting the tone in the powerplay taking us to 48 off the first 5 overs. Baylee (14) was first to fall being caught right on the very edge in the 6th over & Jack (36) fell a couple of overs later to one that stuck in the wicket forcing the leading edge. Mirza (7) had a brief cameo whacking a big six but the fireworks didn’t continue as he was caught trying to clear the ropes for a second time.

The score now in the precarious position of 69 for 3. With the game in the balance a partnership was needed to get us up to a competitive score. Jimmy (43) and Bobby (41) duly accepted with a fantastic 83 run partnership. Some clean hits together with some unorthodox modern day shots saw us up to 150 mark before both fell in quick succession. Macca (8*) and Ben (6*) concluded the the innings, getting us up to a competitive score of 166-5.

The second innings started well for OG with an early wicket from Ellis, that of Whaley captain H. Holden. This now paired the dangerous duo of George Holden and Jake Higginbotham at the crease. With the left hander Holden hitting some lusty blows, to take Whaley to 60-1 after 7.5 overs when the rain began to fall.

Covers went on! Scramble ensued to find the D/L score! The scorers struggled to find it on the app! However, a quick phone call to Newton CC’s D/L guru revealed, to our agony, Whaley were ahead by a few runs! We had to get back out!!!

Thankfully the rain eased and we got back out again straight away! After the rain break the OG bowlers and fielders put in a superb performance.. Skipper Adderley took the wicket of the ominous G. Holden (43) and then overseas Foote picked up 2 in an over to remove last weeks Bissenden final MOTM Higginbotham (29) and H. Jones (9).

Enter Jimmy Lythgoe from the Pyegrove end, who bowled an incredible spell of 4-11 off 3 and half overs. Backed by Baylee’s 3-10, plus a composed run out from keeper McGrail to rip through the Whaley batting order. Whaley finishing 102 all out!

A team now brimming with confidence after another brilliant all round T20 performance. On to finals day we go! Finals day is on the 27th August at Hazel Grove. We are yet to find out our semi final opponents but it will be one of the following: Dinting, Woodley, or the winners of Hayfield/Newton.
